A Brief History of the
F.X. Matt Brewing Company

Brewhouse Square...Utica, NY

Located in the foothills of upstate New York’s legendary Adirondack Mountains, the Matt Brewing Company is one of the few remaining great American regional breweries, now in its third century of brewing.

The Matt Brewing Company was founded by F.X. Matt I, who came to the United States from his native Germany in 1885 in search of greater opportunity. A skilled brewmaster, Matt had learned his craft at the Duke of Baden Brewery in Germany’s Black Forest region – experience that would serve him (and his customers) well in his newly adopted homeland. Within a few years of settling in Utica, NY, he would reorganize the faltering Carl Bierbauer Brewery and build it into one of the largest and most successful of the twelve breweries operating in Utica at that time. It is the only one still in business today.

A family owned business since its founding in 1888, the Matt Brewing Company built a strong following in the northeast on the basis of its flagship brands, Utica Club (touted on TV by Schultz & Dooley) and, more recently, Saranac.
